In Loving Memory
We are devastated to inform our members of the passing of William “Billy” Farrer following an illness.
Billy was a fantastic rugby player quickly making the hooker jersey his own, with also having the distinction of captaining the club in the 1985/86 season.
But it was off the pitch where Billy really excelled. He was instrumental in the forming of the original Penicuik Mini Sides in the 80’s, and can boost he coached Penicuik’s first girl player through his daughter Leah. Billy went to coach several age grades and will have coached a great number of Penicuik 1xv players throughout the ages. Billy also had the honour of coaching the 1xv side in season 1997/98
Billy was the live and soul of the rugby clubs social side, as a member of the legendary Fu Shilling, Billy regular played alongside Colin Hunter, Cliff Thompson, John McIlwhan and others, entertaining members in the clubhouse but also traveling Scotland playing.
On Gala days Billy had no hesitation in appearing in fancy dress preforming on the parade float with family and club members
and who could forget the legendary Burns Supper Nights
Although in his later years Billy wasn’t as frequent in the clubhouse as years gone by, but it was great to see Billy catch up with former teammates at our 100th Centenary Dinner last May where he took his place as a club captain. Billy also has the distinct honour of being one of only 2 captains whose son has also gone on to captain the club, with Niall captaining the side in the 2003/04 season.
Our thoughts go to his wife Paulina, daughter Leah and son Niall, all his beloved Grandchildren and his wider family.
In keeping with Bill’s wishes he decided to have a direct cremation and his ashes will be scattered in Silverburn
Another one gone too soon
