Club Newsletter Match Day Programme – Week 17

Grab a coffee, sit back and relax and enjoy the read

President : Gav McQuillan

A huge amount of rugby to enjoy this weekend with some great local games in in between the 6 Nations.

On Saturday morning the U16s head down the coast to visit North Berwick. Having a storing youth set up which has produced a number of Scottish players recently it’s a great opportunity for the Penicuik lads to step up against strong opponents and show everyone how quickly they are developing.

We have talked a lot this week within the club about ambition as we start to plan for next season and there was huge amount of it on show last weekend when the 2s were desperately unlucky not to pick up the win last weekend.

With a great opportunity to bounce back quickly I’m sure a strong 2s squad will be full of confidence as they head to Edinburgh Northern.

Enjoy your rugby weekend

Penicuik 2xv 19  v Preston Lodge 2xv 21

This week sees the 2nd XV make another trip to the Bunker at Inverleith Park to play Edinburgh Northern. Earlier on in the season we were squeezed out by a very vibrant Northern team having played below par ourselves. We had hoped to play Northern at home at Montgomery Park but a balancing formula of games played before the league split meant we had to travel away.

Last week saw us host National league 2 side Preston Lodge. Due to the school holidays we had numerous players unavailable. However Isi managed to pull in some Fijian mates to bolster our numbers and a very entertaining match was had. Pre match had coaches Mann and Cartwright forking the pitch to get rid of the huge lake that had appeared overnight, what was left however caused very heavy conditions. Try’s from Waibuta, Bete and Rokobuli gave us a 19 – 14 lead with 10 minutes to go. PL hit back with a 3 man overlap to take the lead 21 – 19.

All was not lost however with 5 minutes to go PL gave away a penalty in front of their posts. Up stepped Fin to slot the ball to the right of the posts. 2 minutes later the same thing happened, penalty in front of the posts and somehow the ball slipped to the right of the posts. The saying awful things happen in 3s was the cry of the afternoon as with a minute to go another penalty was given in front of PLs posts only for this one to slide to the left this time. A last minute surge by the pack almost got us into a scoring position and had the referee not forgotten about the penalty advantage we were playing we would have had a very drivable scoring opportunity. Our line out was 100% dominant. Man of the match was local squaddie Orisi “Foxy” Waibuta. Final score a narrow loss 19 – 21.

Let’s hope we keep our heads and get last Saturday’s game out of the system. It’s a huge day at Inverleith Park with Northern 1s potentially being crowned their league champs.

Let’s hope we can pop some of that party spirit with a Penicuik win.
