Gav McQuillan

A warm welcome to our annual sevens tournament and to what promises to be an enjoyable afternoon of competitive rugby. As ever it’s great to see both old and new faces turning out to bring the curtain down on our senior playing season.

We again continue with our popular tournament format, including the  second ladies centenary cup which we hope will continue to grow over the coming years

Today is not just about the rugby it’s a great opportunity to say thank you to the many sponsors, volunteers and members who have supported us this season. Both the financial contributions and importantly their time and effort is crucial  to keep things running and  to help the club grow and develop.

As a club it’s important that we continue to make progress building on our strong  foundations and traditions that make us who we are but also trying new things. As we look forward to next season I’m delighted that we will be creating the Penicuik Panthers our first all girls team. In the past after P7 our female players have had to travel further afield to continue their rugby careers so this is an important milestone for us  to be able to now have the Panthers up and running. Please spread the word as we look to grow this part of the club.

Finally good luck to all the players and officials  and fingers crossed that the infamous Penicuik weather is kind to us.

Enjoy your day

The very first Penicuik sevens

The club had previous entered seven-a-side competitions, without much success, and it was decided in 1965 to run a Penicuik tournament as an experiment. The decision was due directly to the enthusiasm for the sevens game displayed by lan Stoddart, a former Heriot’s School 1XV forward, who had been a very youthful club captain in the 1961-62 season.

The President’s Cup was sourced and donated by former president Edward Jardine and current president John Baldwin

The tournament was held on Saturday the 1st May with a 2:30pm kick off and featured 16 teams from the local area including a Penicuik B side who were called up on the morning of the event.

Both Penicuik sides never made it past the first round with the ‘A’ team losing to Holy Cross Academy (now known as Inverleith RFC) 13pts to 5 and the ‘B’ team crashing out 10-0 to local rivals Dalkeith.

Fellow Midlothian side Lasswade met Preston Lodge in the final with Preston Lodge coming out winners 14-5 to to claim the honour of the first name engraved on the Presidents Cup.
