MacWood Fuels Player Points
As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, Penicuik RFC’s attack has kept the scoreboard glowing all season long. Thanks to Macwood Fuels—suppliers of kiln dry logs, stave and kindling for your home fires—we’re proud to highlight the players who’ve lit up the pitch with their points-scoring power.
From scorching tries to cool-headed kicks, every score has added fuel to the fire of Penicuik pride. Just like Macwood’s logs, our players have kept the heat burning strong week after week.
So whether it’s warming your hearth at home or heating up the scoreboard at the weekend, remember:
All we need is fuel… Macwood Fuels! https://www.macwoodfuels.com
No change at the top as both Alan Haynes and Ally McCormick notched any points on the board, but with both selected this Saturday will we see a kick off challenge at Union Park??
However we have a new kid in town jumping up to joint 3rd spot.. well done to Reuben Harris who scored a brace against Corstorphine on Saturday to join fellow Midi player Logan on 25 points, and each tied on 5 tries. Other movers seen Euan Hale continue his scoring streak touching down alongside Reuben to move onto 4 tries and 20pts.
With still games to go this year… who will end 2025 as the top dog???

Hunters Kids Rugby – Building Skills for Life!
Last Sunday
Our Hunters section, proudly supported by Oval 4×4 – Land Rover and Jaguar Specialists,(specialists in Land Rover and Jaguar service and repairs), made the trip to Portobello for the first time in many years.
Travelling to new grounds is always a special part of the rugby journey, and playing in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat made this visit even more memorable. The kids produced some fantastic rugby — great tries, strong tackles, and plenty of effort from start to finish.
But the real highlight wasn’t just the rugby. It was seeing every child smiling, laughing, and thriving in their rugby environment. Whatever challenges they may face at school or in everyday life, being part of a team and a supportive rugby community gives them a safe space to belong, grow, and shine.
That’s the power of rugby — and why introducing your child to the game could be one of the best decisions you make.
🏆 Players of the Match (fully MOT’d and roadworthy):
-
P1/2 – Cooper
-
P3 – Odrahn
-
P4 – Albert
-

It was a special Sunday for the MacKay household as both Harley and his brother Cooper scooped up players of the week.. We hope the mantlepiece is big enough to hold both trophies!

🏉 Panthers On Tour – Sponsored by Perfect Clean
What a cracking Sunday morning for rugby as we crossed the border to Berwick. We travelled with eight Panthers and teamed up with three girls from Murrayfield Wanderers to form a strong squad.
Our opening game was against Kelso/Dalkeith, where we produced some good rugby and set up two tries for the Wandies girls. There were some big tackles going in and plenty of line breaks from our Panthers, but we struggled at the breakdown and eventually went down 6–2.
Next up was a combined Lasswade/Boroughmuir/Watsonians side. The girls were far more switched on, moving the ball well and finding space for strong runs. Despite still being second best at the breakdown, our defence held firm and we battled to a 5–5 draw, with Elsa adding another try to her growing tally this season.
After a fire‑up chat with all three coaches about our focus areas, the girls went back out against Currie. What a difference — they were ready for a fight. Ava and Eva worked tirelessly to secure ball at the breakdown, while Julia, Daisy and Molly put in some fantastic tackles. Layla showed brilliant awareness and footwork to score two tries out wide. Although we lost 6–2, the performance was outstanding and full of spirit.
Our final match was a play‑off rematch against Lasswade/Boroughmuir/Watsonians. The intensity stayed high and the girls carried the same attitude into the game. Ava, Eva, Daisy and Julia were relentless at the breakdown, while our defence was superb — strong line speed and big hits from Grace, Layla, Elsa, Eva, Molly and Daisy. In attack, we linked up brilliantly with the Wandies girls to cross for a couple of tries. The Panthers were ecstatic to finish the day with a 2–1 win.
After such a strong set of performances, choosing Panther of the Week was no easy task. Every girl worked their socks off, but this week the honour goes to Elsa.
Well done to all the girls — a fantastic effort and a brilliant day of rugby
Monday Training
Despite the damp conditions tonight, five of our Panthers swapped a warm, dry home for a mud‑soaked pitch — and what a session they put in!
We kicked things off with some stretching and running to get the girls warmed up, before diving into a couple of lively games of “Queen of the Ring.” Anatswa claimed the first round, while Layla showed her determination by taking the next two.
Dave then led a defensive drill, pairing the girls up so one made the initial tackle while the other secured the ball by pulling the carrier to ground and going back over. From there, we moved into an attacking drill in threes: fending off defenders and offloading to support in the first channel, tackling and clearing out with a pick‑and‑go in the second, and finishing with a kick‑and‑chase in the third.
To wrap things up, we played a 4‑on‑3 touch game — or at least we thought that was the end. In true Panthers style, the girls decided to finish the night with some mud‑sliding, proving once again that even in the toughest conditions, they bring energy, fun, and plenty of smiles
Wednesday
We had a really solid indoor session tonight, starting with a quick chat with the girls before getting stuck in. We opened with a reaction and evasion warm‑up in pairs, then moved into a couple of lively games of Tug of War, which went down really well.
Next up was the return of some Sumo Wrestling — great fun and some excellent effort on the mats. Building on Monday’s work, we then focused again on defending in pairs, sharpening up our technique and teamwork.
To finish, we played Sharks and Fishes, which brought plenty of energy and laughter to round off the evening.

Last Weekend
Last Saturday our U14 Midi side continued their rugby journey, welcoming Corstorphine to Montgomery Park. The boys showed great determination, with Reuban crossing twice and Euan adding another fine try. Everyone put in a real shift, and the highlights video below captures the effort and spirit on display.
While the scoreboard didn’t fall in our favour, what matters most at this stage is valuable game time. Every footprint in the mud adds to their rugby mileage, and the more matches they play, the more progress they’ll see.
We are a little light on numbers and would love to welcome more players into the squad. No experience is necessary — expert coaching is provided by our Rugby Development Officer and our dedicated coaches, who themselves came through the Midi age grades before becoming established 1XV players.
If your child is looking for a fun, supportive environment to learn new skills, make friends, and be part of a team, rugby could be the perfect fit. Contact us for more details and join the journey!

This week marks a huge milestone for Penicuik Women’s Rugby! 💙❤️
We’ve officially received our brand-new match strip — and it’s more than just a jersey. It’s a statement of intent. The new kit represents Penicuik’s commitment to investing in women’s rugby, building a clear pathway, and creating a strong future for girls and women in the sport
It’s a proud moment that celebrates just how far we’ve come in such a short space of time. Here’s to new beginnings, bold strides, and the next chapter of women’s rugby in Penicuik
This isn’t just a jersey drop — it’s a statement.
We’re investing in our women’s side.
We’re building a future.
We’re proud to be part of the movement.

🏉 1XV Match & League Update (Sponsored by McKenzie Skip Hire)
Last weekend the squad travelled to Leith, a ground that has rarely been kind to our 1XV — and unfortunately, that run continued.
Despite the result, this was a spirited performance. The boys worked hard throughout but ultimately fell short of putting points on the board. Much of the damage came from Leith’s powerful Number 8, who seemed almost unstoppable. With his flowing blond hair giving him a “Thor‑like” presence, he picked up from the scrum four times and crossed for four tries without a hand being laid on him.
There were positives to take, though. It was fantastic to see Euan Reid back in the side, and he marked his return in style with a well‑taken try, converted by Blair.
While the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort, the commitment and determination shown by the squad gives us plenty to build on for the weeks ahead.
The starting squad lined up as:
G.Borthwick, L.Falconer-Millar, P.Kirkwood, E.Reid, A. McLellan, S. Hawkins, P.Smith, N.Dowds, A. Cartwright, B.Gilligan, G.Parry, A. Harris, C.Doyle, P.Clements, A.McCormick. Replacements: A.Findlay, S. Findlay, A.Smith, J.McCabe, J.Trotter, S.Touchstone-Hall, J.Donoghue
This Saturday, our 1XV head to Union Park to face Corstorphine.
The early game in the season seen the Edinburgh men record a convincing 44-10 win at Montgomery Park.
Sitting 3rd in the league (but with 2 games on hand on 2nd) they are looking to improve on their 5 wins this season and are always a handful at home.
Start team is as –

Around the League
-
Earlston move to 2nd on 30pts, however have played one more game than league leaders Livingston and 2 more than 2nd placed Corstorphine .
-
Leith move to 4th after their win over Penicuik, 4 pts clear of Quins.
-
RHS’s game v Corstorphine was abandoned due to a serious injury, and we hope the player is recovering well. Earlston welcome RHS this Saturday
-
Forrester travel to Hawick looking to build day light between ourselves.
