Rugby Roundup

🏉 Welcome to Your Weekly Rugby Round-Up! 🏉

Whether you were pitchside cheering in the rain or catching scores from the sidelines of life, this is your one-stop scroll for everything Penicuik Rugby.

From hard-fought tackles to rising stars, we’re diving into last week’s action and gearing up for the weekend ahead across all our sections.

It’s more than just match results—it’s the heartbeat of our club, our players, and our community.

So grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s celebrate the grit, glory, and game we all love

It’s been a busy September across the club and I wanted to thank every one for their continued hard work and support to make it all happen.

The Hunters have got off to a fast start with a fantastic festival followed up by a productive sponsored walk across the Pentlands. Our girls team, the Panthers continue to grow quickly and it’s brilliant to see the progress they are making on and off the pitch. Finally I’m delighted to report we now have a Penicuik Ladies senior team, again this is gathering momentum fast so watch out for their first outing on the pitch soon.

The Senior teams have also been back in action with the 2s sitting in the top half of the table and the First XV, despite some promising performances, still looking for that first win. A huge amount of hard work is being put in to ensure we field 2 competitive teams each week which very few clubs can consistently do so please continue to support where you can.

Finally as a club we have developed an excellent reputation across the rugby community for being a welcoming and friendly place to be especially for visiting teams and referees. A core part of that is respect and doing the right thing. This is everyone’s responsibility across the club to ensure we maintain those standards and behave in the correct manner. We need to keep building on this and I would appreciate your support in helping us maintain that reputation and the atmosphere we have created.

Have an enjoyable rugby weekend.

Cheers

Welcome to the world, Daisy!

Huge congratulations to one of our amazing sponsors and her husband Aidan on the arrival of their beautiful baby girl on Friday evening — a perfect little sister for Alfie and Hugo 💐

And in true club spirit, Aidan was back in action for the 1XV less than 24 hours later… proving that sleepless nights and line breaks go hand in hand! 🍼➡️🏉

🎉 He did it! Archie’s 5K Challenge Complete! 🏅

Last weekend, we witnessed something truly special. Archie—son of long-standing members Ross & Claire—completed his incredible 5K walk in his frame, showing courage, grit, and a smile that lit up the whole club. 💙

Living with cerebral palsy, this challenge was monumental. But Archie’s determination never wavered, and his achievement reminds us all what strength really looks like.

Now, let’s rally even harder. The fundraising continues, and every donation helps build a brighter future for Archie—supporting his mobility, independence, and the next steps in his journey.

📹 Watch the video, feel inspired, and if you can, please donate. Let’s show Archie that his club is behind him every step of the way.

🍍**Hawaiian Night Incoming**🍍

Blair and Craig are swinging into action with a night that’s more tropical than tasteful. Whether your shirt screams “beach vibes” or “lost property bin,” you’ll fit right in.

Expect pineapples, questionable fashion, and themed games that’ll have you wondering if Blair’s been sipping too many piña coladas or if Craig’s just naturally competitive in a grass skirt.

Come for the chaos, stay for the cocktails.

Tickets via club shop shortly

Club Point Scorers

After 4 weeks of rugby, U14 scrum half Logan McCreath continues to lead the way holding both top try scorer and top points scorer.  2xv standoff Ally McMcCormick continues at 2nd with 22pts

Moving up to 3rd with his 3rd try of the season is Orisi “Foxy” Waibuta after his try against Corstorphine in Saturday

This season the club has scored 25 tries, 14 conversions and 3 penalties..still no drop goal scored by the club since before the 2016 season.

Last Week

Last Saturday our mini rugby stars walked 10 mighty miles through the Pentland Hills — all to raise money for new kit and equipment!

With 500 Miles blasting in the background, they proved they’d walk even more for the club they love

You can still support their amazing effort — just speak to any of the Hunters coaches to donate. Every step helps!

Our Mini Rugby sessions aren’t just about learning the game — they’re about building confidence, making friends, and getting kids moving outdoors.

From teamwork and resilience to fresh air and fitness, every training session helps children in P1 to P7 grow stronger in body and mind.

Come see what it’s all about — and why rugby might be the best thing your child hasn’t tried yet

🛻 Hunters on the Move – Powered by Oval 4×4 🐾

This Sunday, our mini rugby side, the Hunters, shift into gear for an away day adventure as they head to Portobello Rugby for an 11:00am kick-off (meet time 10:30am).

While Portobello might sound like a beachy cruise, the rugby action takes place inland at Duddingston—so make sure your sat nav is locked onto EH15 3QE to avoid any off-road detours!

Sponsored by Oval 4×4, specialists in Land Rover and Jaguar repairs, our Hunters are built for all terrain—mud, grit, and glory. Whether it’s tackling like a Defender or sprinting like an F-Type, these kids are ready to roll.

Let’s fuel their journey with support, cheer them on from the sidelines, and make sure they return with their tanks full of pride.

Last Weekend

Sunday

Enjoyable session in the ☀️ today. We welcomed 3 new faces to the session- Ava, Daisy and Orla. Delighted to have them down and we hope they enjoyed themselves. 15 girls down even without some of our regular girls!

Warmed up with some mobility and speed. Then moved into some strength based relays, driving and carrying tackle bags. 💪

Moved on to a defensive shape drill. Working on connection and line speed. We took that into a game which the girls did well with. Planned to work on lots more but as always time got away from us.

Well done to Layla on panther of the week 🐆. Much deserved for her constant energy and commitment.  She worked hard on both sides of the ball today with some nice steals and quality tackles to add to her attacking threat.  👌

💥 Panthers Girls Training Update 🐾

Another fantastic turnout last night with 15 girls hitting the pitch—including three new faces back for more! It’s brilliant to see the squad growing and the energy building week by week.

While focus wobbled a bit at times (we blame the midweek giggles!), the girls knuckled down and made great progress. We kicked off with handling drills, working on timing runs and bursting onto the ball at pace—plus a few cheeky loops thrown in to keep things sharp.

Next up was a tackling circuit: stepping round the corner, dropping body height, and driving into the bag before rolling out and clearing the ruck shield. The girls then took on our “musical rucks” drill—designed to sharpen footwork, body position, and ball-stealing instincts under pressure.

We wrapped things up with a game of touch rugby, where Dave gave each team specific tasks to focus on. The girls rose to the challenge and played with real intent and creativity.

💬 Thinking about giving rugby a go? Whether you’re brand new or just curious, now’s the perfect time to join the Panthers. We’re building a team full of spirit, strength, and smiles—and there’s always room for more!

Penicuik Women’s Round Up

Training continues under the lights at Montgomery Park, with the team working hard to sharpen their skills ahead of the new festival-format matches kicking off in mid-October. Excitingly, there’s potential for the Penicuik Women’s team to host for the very first time — a brilliant milestone for the squad and the club.

Meanwhile, last weekend the Women and Panthers hosted a Come and Watch party. Turnout was fantastic, the atmosphere buzzing, and free pizza was flowing! A few classic rugby jerseys even made an appearance, adding to the fun. A big thanks to everyone who came along and supported us.

Keep an eye on our socials for the latest updates and announcements!

Last Weekend

Penicuik 10 – 44 Corstorphine.

The 1xv were blown away 37-0 nil in the first half by a larger opposition, before regaining some dignity in the 2nd half to record a 10-44 loss to make it 3 losses in a row.

This Week

This Saturday, the stakes are sky-high and the skips are stacked as Penicuik 1XV host Forrester in a clash that could decide who gets hauled out of the basement of the Arnold Clark East Region League Division 2.

Neither side has registered a win this season, but Penicuik’s try bonus point against Leith is currently the difference between last and second-last. That single point? It’s the lid on the skip—and Forrester are rattling it.

🗓️ History in the Heap

The last time Forrester visited Montgomery Park was back in the 2016/17 season, and it ended in chaos:

– 🛑 Game called off at 61 minutes due to a touchline altercation

– 🐝 Penicuik were leading 7–6 at the time

That unfinished business has been sitting in the recycling bin for years—and this weekend, it’s getting sorted.

🧯 Relegation Scrap or Skip-Off Showdown?

Call it what you like—a basement brawl, a bin-day derby, or a relegation decider—but this fixture is more than just points. It’s pride, grit, and the chance to prove we’re not ready to be dumped.

Expect:

– 💥 Big collisions in midfield

– 🔁 Tactical recycling of possession

– 🧹 Clean-outs sharper than a McKenzie skip on a Monday morning

Penicuik Selection.

The front 5 remains unchanged from last weekend, Niall Dowds comes in for Ross Liddle at 8 for his first start in the 1xv.  Andrew Cartwright moves from the bench to 9 to allow Alfie to take up the 12 shirt as Craig Doyle moves to 11.

Last Weekend

No action for our sexy seconds.  Instead they packed the touchline at Montgomery Park to cheer on the 1xv

This weekend

This Saturday, our 2XV welcome Midlothian neighbours Lasswade 2XV to Montgomery Park for a 3pm kick-off in a fixture that’s got more local heat than a skip full of fireworks.

Lasswade sit 2nd in the table on 12 points, just one ahead of Penicuik (11), with Watsonians leading the pack on 15. A win here could see us leapfrog our rivals and send a clear message: we’re not here to be dumped—we’re here to deliver.

🗑️ Recent Meetings – Time to Recycle the Scoreline

– 07/10/23 – Lasswade 29–10 Penicuik

– 13/01/24– Lasswade 32–7 Penicuik

Those results? Already in the skip. This weekend, we’re shredding the past and composting fresh confidence.

🚛 Form Guide – Lasswade’s Load

– ❌ Lost 24–33 to Currie 3XV last weekend

– ✅ Beat Dalkeith 2XV 53–7

– ✅ Awarded a 28–0 win after Corstorphine failed to field a team

They’ve shown attacking flair, but their defence has had more holes than a leaky wheelie bin. Penicuik will be looking to sort that out—with a few tactical disposals of our own.

🏟️ **Montgomery Park – Our Turf, Our Terms**

Home advantage means we’re not just hosting—we’re hauling. Expect big collisions, sharp clear-outs, and a squad ready to recycle every missed opportunity into momentum.

With McKenzie Skip Hire behind us, we’re not just managing waste—we’re turning it into winning energy. Whether it’s a turnover at the breakdown or a clean-out in the ruck, we’re here to sort, skip, and score.

We’re not currently privy to the starting 2xv for Saturday but our guess it could look like this –
