Josh ‘in’ around
Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local schools. Here’s what he’s been up to :-
This week, we continued our exciting rugby sessions at Roslin and Mauricewood Primary Schools.
Our main focus was on teaching the kids how to find space and move off the ball. Through a variety of engaging games and drills, we made learning fun and dynamic.
At Beeslack, we emphasized hand-eye coordination and game understanding, using games as much as possible to keep the sessions enjoyable and interactive. This marked the final week of our 6-week block with the S1-3 students, and I’m thrilled to share that next week, I have multiple sessions planned at primary schools across the local area.
We’re eager to inspire more young players to join the rugby community and experience the joy and teamwork that come with the sport!
If you’d like your child to try rugby in Penicuik’s primary schools please message Josh at do@penicuikrugby.org
Senior Rugby
Anyone watching the first 20 minutes would feel like they had returned to 1990’s Kings Park to re-watch the infamous 1996 Dalkeith Shield Fixture (photo below).
A very feisty opening 20 minutes almost saw the game abandoned from a series of nasty incidents. Dalkeith opened the scoring with an early 3pts before Nemani danced over to make it 7-8. Dalkeith went 8-7 ahead before Paul Hope was dismissed with his first red card of his 28yr senior career for an incident unseen by the referee.
Despite now being down to 14 men for the remainder of the game, the 2xv showed great heart and courage. 20yr old Jacob Lee made a break down the wing to release 18yr old Arran King, winning a 1v1 with the Dalkeith full back he stepped inside, survived an ankle tap and a further tackle before touching over just outside the posts to take a 12-8 lead.
2xv captain Ally McCormick then extended the lead. Alan Findlay made a line break and was tackled to the ground, however was able to release the ball and pop to McCormick who was able to cross the try line.
Veteran and former club captain Rich Moffat soon extended the Penicuik lead. After several phases, Findlay attacked down the right wing, carrying the ball into contact, forming a ruck on the opponent’s 22. Seeing space, Moffat called for the ball from centre field and Touchstone-Hall shipped a 15m pass from the base of the ruck into Moffat’s hands. Running a good line, he sidestepped the first defender and found himself 5m from the Dalkeith tryline where he was tackled, but a powerful carry and handoff took him close to the Dalkeith try line. Using his height and at full stretch, Moffat dotted the ball down on the try line with his left hand, earning 5 points for the visitors.
Following a delay in the game due to a serious Dalkeith injury and a pitch change , given the Dalkeith 1vx had just finished their cup game to Dunbar, Stand off McCormick soon got his second of the day afternoon. With the Dalkeith 1xv players now on the touchline the mix of young and old Penicuik 2xv players had additional pressures to deal with. 21yr Nemani took a ball midfield and after drawing his defender, freed space to off load to McCormick. These 2 playing more and more together is definitely helping create more opportunities.
The result was sealed in the final moments when 21yr old Jacob Lee supported a break from McCabe and received the pass beating 2 Dalkeith defenders to cross over for fabulous 40-13 win.
In this spirited contest against our Midlothian neighbours Dalkeith, our team demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience, emerging victorious despite the physical challenges. Both sides played with commendable intensity, and the match was a testament to the true spirit of rugby. This was evident in the clubhouse after the game where despite losing the match, Dalkeith showed great sportsmanship and we look forward to welcoming the Kings Park Men to Montgomery Park later in the season.
We are proud of our players’ dedication and sportsmanship, qualities that were evident throughout the game. As always, we remain committed to upholding the integrity of the sport and fostering a sense of community and respect among all teams.
Our recent success on the field is a reflection of our hard work and unity. We look forward to many more exciting matches and the continued support of our fans and fellow club members
