Josh ‘in’ around
Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local schools. Here’s what he’s been up to :-
Are you a student looking for an exciting new sport to try out? Look no further! Our dedicated rugby development officer has been hard at work bringing the thrill of rugby to schools across Penicuik.
This week, he’s had amazing sessions with students at Cuiken, Mauricewood, and Strathesk. We focused on honing their key rugby skills, improving reaction times, and sharpening hand-eye coordination through a variety of fun drills and engaging games.
As we head towards the festive season, the energy and enthusiasm from these sessions have been incredible! But the excitement doesn’t stop there. We’ve teamed up with Active Schools to plan a fantastic rugby festival, set to be held right here at the rugby club. This event will bring together all the primary schools for some friendly and spirited games as part of Scottish Rugby Schools Week.
Why Rugby? It’s more than just a sport – it’s about building confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Whether you’re looking to get fit, make new friends, or develop new skills, rugby has something to offer. Our sessions are designed to be inclusive and fun, making it the perfect opportunity for everyone to get involved.
**Highlights of what we offer:**
– **Skill Development**: Learn the essential techniques of rugby in a supportive environment.
– **Fun Drills and Games**: Enhance your agility, speed, and coordination while having a blast.
– **Team Spirit**: Experience the camaraderie and support that comes with being part of a team.
– **Community Events**: Participate in exciting events and festivals, like our upcoming Rugby Festival.
So, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience, we invite you to join us and discover the joy of rugby. Come along, bring your friends, and be part of the Penicuik Rugby family. Let’s make this festive season memorable with some great rugby action!
For more information, contact us or visit our rugby club. We can’t wait to see you on the field!
If you’d like your child to try rugby in Penicuik’s primary schools please message Josh at do@penicuikrugby.org
Senior Rugby
1xv
Penicuik 1xv v Hawick Harlequins 2pm Ko
This Saturday the 1xv take a bus trip to Hawick to take on Quins, in what is a must win game. Since the 51-33 fixture in September, Quins went on to win 4 of their next 5 games to occupy joint 2nd in the league. This winning streak has included good wins away to Corstorphine and home wins against Livingston, RHC & Leith.
Penicuik will need all their players available and at the top of their game this weekend if they stand any chance of getting a result down in Hawick. The team has a massive boost with the return of captain Alan Haynes and centre Aidan Dean, who play together on Saturday for only the 3rd time this season,
With Trinity having a game in hand at the bottom of the league, the 1xv squad are staring relegation in the face especially with tricky away games to Dunbar and Leith in early 2025.

2xv
Penicuik 2xv v MURRAYFIELD WANDERERS/FORRESTER/INVERLEITH 2ND XV 2pm Kick
Montgomery Park, Penicuik.
This weekend, the 2xv play a development game against a combined Edinburgh clubs team. Its a great way for players of other clubs who aren’t able to field their own 2xv sides to ensure they have guys getting well needed game time.
Last Saturday the 2xv had an official home win of 55-17 against Watsonians 3xv, however in reality Watsons turned up with 10 players, with Penicuik supplying players to fill the gaps .
Despite this, it was a good run out after the autumn break. Also pleasing to see the new strips get a run out(photos below)

Penicuik U13s vs. Wolves U13s – An Epic Battle at Montgomery Park!
On a crisp Saturday morning, the Penicuik U13s welcomed the formidable Wolves U13s to Montgomery Park for what turned out to be an electrifying game of rugby. Under the spirited leadership of captain Alex, our young warriors were ready to showcase the fruits of their dedicated training, and boy, did they deliver!
From the first whistle, the intensity was palpable. The Wolves drew first blood with an early try, seizing a swift lead. But Penicuik, undeterred, retaliated with a dazzling try from Thomas, beautifully converted by Matis, bringing the score level. The match was on, and the energy was through the roof!
As the game progressed, the crowd was treated to some scintillating rugby. Alex, leading by example, surged through the Wolves’ defense to score another try. Not long after, Logan added to the scoreboard with a fantastic try of his own. Every player on the field exhibited the skills and determination honed through relentless practice.
The game reached a nail-biting climax with both teams locked in at 19-19. It was a testament to the hard work and sportsmanship of the Penicuik boys, who have shown immense growth and camaraderie week after week.
Beyond the thrilling action on the pitch, rugby offers our young players invaluable life lessons. It teaches resilience, teamwork, and leadership – qualities that will benefit them far beyond the rugby field. These skills are not just for winning games but are crucial in navigating the challenges of life.
To all potential new players and parents: come join Penicuik Rugby Club.
Experience the joy of the game, the thrill of the competition, and the lifelong friendships forged in the heart of our community.
Let’s continue to build a strong, supportive, and vibrant team together!
Let’s keep the spirit high and the rugby dreams alive! 🌟🏉

Penicuik in Europe
PRFC’s newest mini rugby coach, Rob Carmichael, has been named on the bench for Edinburgh Rugby in tonights EPCR Challenge Cup away to Gloucester.
It’s been fantastic having Rob in and around our Hunters section the past few weeks with the kids literally looking up to him (not to mention the Hunters Mums seeking selfies…….) and everyone involved are proud as he makes his Edinburgh Debut.
Rob follows a long line of Penicuik coaches involved in the Edinburgh set up such as Simon Cross, Simon Webster, Ander Munro, Mike Pike and Dave Hewitt.
Many older players will remember Dave “Norm” Hewitt, who after coaching a lively scrum session immediately retired from rugby after former Penicuik captain “Penalty” Pete Rainey informed the 22 time capped All Black that his scrummaging technique was awful and he’d spent his whole life scrummaging the wrong way (who could ever recover after a telling like that)
We hope Rob goes well tonight, and the supporters in the club will be cheering you on
