Gav’s Message
As we continue the new year, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support of Penicuik Rugby Club. Our shared passion for rugby and our community is what makes our club truly special.
I am writing to encourage all our members to make the most of our bar facilities on Friday and Saturday evenings. The clubhouse is more than just a building; it’s a place where friendships are formed, families come together, and memories are made. We warmly welcome families to join us, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.
Catch all the exciting action on our big screens. From Edinburgh & Glasgow matches to international tournaments, including the upcoming Guinness Six Nations starting in February and the British & Irish Lions tour later in July, we’ve got it all covered. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the thrill of live sports in a rugby environment.
Our clubhouse is a place for the whole family. Bring your children, watch them play, and socialize with other parents. It’s a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our community bonds and support each other. Gone are the days of the stereotypical beer guzzling foul mouthed rugby player found propping up the bar.
The revenue generated from our bar is essential for supporting our rugby teams and maintaining the high standards of our facilities. By enjoying a drink at the clubhouse, you’re directly contributing to the success and sustainability of Penicuik Rugby Club.
To those parents whose children play for our Mini and midi section, we especially encourage you to start utilizing our clubhouse facilities. It’s a great way to get more involved in the club, meet other families, and enjoy the friendly and welcoming atmosphere we strive to create.
We do know we can’t stand still and are seeking ways to improve our clubhouse experience, this may be opening earlier on Fridays, all day Saturdays or even Sunday afternoon opening. If you have a suggestion that would encourage you to increase your use of our lounge facilities please let us know.
Your presence and support make all the difference, and we look forward to seeing you at the clubhouse on Fridays and Saturdays.
With warm regards,
Gav McQuillan

Penicuik v Leith
Leith Academy, Edinburgh, 2pm KO
At the time of writing the full team is still being prepared with a number of players currently being chased for availability.
Secretly the coaching staff were happy for last weekends cancellation away to Dunbar given the volume of unavailable players. Thankfully the squad have benefited from indoor training this month whilst the pitches have been covered in snow/ice which only thawed away this week.
Leith is always great encounter, with many memorable games over the years at the academy. However we have to go back to 2015 to find the last Penicuik victory.
16/10/21 Leith 15 -5 Penicuik
12/10/19 Leith 33 – 19 Penicuik
16/02/19 Leith 31 – 24 Penicuik
14/11/15 Leith 23 – 28 Penicuik
27/09/14 Leith 57 – 17 Penicuik
Team will be updated prior to the match
Leith line up as :

Leith 1xv
Elsewhere in the League.
Dunbar travel to 2nd place Livingston, with the West Lothian men looking to start closing the points difference at the top. Its an Edinburgh derby with Trinity hosting Royal high school, whilst Corstorphine make the trip down to Hawick where a Quins victory would see them jump to 3rd place.

Penicuik v Edinburgh Northern
Inverleith Park, Edinburgh 2pm ko
It’s 3rd v 2nd this Saturday at Inverleith Park, which the locals call “The Bunker”. The earlier game at Montgomery park seen the 2xv sneak at 20-19 victory on a sunny October afternoon (Photos in the gallery below). Games against Northern are always physical affairs with nothing left on the pitch come full time. Inverleith can often be a very soft pitch this time of year which traditionally suits their large forward pack so the backs will be hoping the Penicuik forwards put in the hard graft to give them plenty space to run the tries in.
This Saturday Rich & James have been able to select from a large squad with a number of players now fielding consecutive positions which always improves team skill and player knowledge.

Youth Rugby
This Saturday our U16 combined Lasswade/Penicuik team welcome Linlithgow for a 10am ko.
It’d be great for the young side to have a pitch line full of home support for their 2nd outing at Montgomery Park this season.
Our U13’s continue their rugby journey with the side picking up in numbers which increases what they can do at training. Their next outing is away to Portobello Sat 25th Jan
Mini Rugby
This Sunday our Hunters make the trip to Almond Park to face Livingston (sat nav eh54 5np). Arrival time is 10:30am for a 11am kick off.
There is onsite carpark (please follow the one way system). P1-5’s will play on the main pitch, with P6-7 on the 2xv pitch to the right hand side.
Although there is no clubhouse access, the main stand is open for hot drinks with bathroom facilities. Players will also be issued food from the stand following full time.
Also watch this space for a forth coming Hunters Family Day Out (or in…)
Indoor Training
With the usual winter weather approaching we have been able to secure indoor training for youngest P1-3 sides at the Penicuik Leisure Gym Hall on Wednesday evenings.
Can parents please take their kids to the leisure reception for 6:15pm where the coaches will collect, and bring them back down to reception for 7:15pm.
Other News
Doddie League
At the time of going to press we have 31 members registered who have covered a massive 2782 miles, which is bloody brilliant! Well done to all!
Top of the league is club captain Paul Hope, who is maintaining his fitness over the winter with 326 miles. Any rumours about his retirement at the end of the season should be ignored if he keeps the hard graft going!
The biggest shoutout however, goes to Sandy Currie has been out walking/running and has clocked up 284miles!….However, are we calling shenanigans on Ben Cartwrights 150 odd extra miles in the past 3 days??? That’s some amount of walking round Glencorse Golf Club….
Club Shop Update
For the past 7 years our club shop has been run with the assistance of PSL. Their parent company, Stevensons, have decided to wind down the PSL brand in favour of XXV (which can be seen on our new playing strips)
Whilst they make the full transition to the XXV we have had to withdraw all our products from the shop portal ahead of this closing. Unfortunately for the time being there is now no opportunity to purchase any new Penicuik Rugby Clothing.
We know this is a massive inconvenience for those members who had been intending on making purchases, and we apologise for this, and yes, we should have communicated better with our members.
A new club shop portal will be available in the future, however we have no control over when this will be implemented
