International Women’s Day (8th March )

On the weekend of International Women’s day, we hear from Our U14 coach Sonia Watson.

The Scottish Rugby Union launched its “Women in Leadership: Rugby and Networking” seminar series for women in East-based clubs on Saturday, March 1st.

I was delighted to represent the club at this event, which provided a valuable opportunity to connect with women holding diverse roles within their respective clubs, including coaches, presidents, players, and secretaries.

The seminar featured an icebreaker followed by a panel discussion where speakers shared their experiences, highlighting their journeys, challenges, and successes in their club roles. We then engaged in networking, fostering collaboration and information sharing.

The day concluded with an invitation to attend the Edinburgh Women v Clovers game at The Hive. This was a highly positive experience and I gave praise to the event’s organisation and the networking opportunities, and expressed my enthusiasm for future seminars.

The soup and scones were very nice too (but would have preferred a Gin)

Our P7 girls attended the Scottish Rugby Girls Evolution event at Dunbar last Sunday. There were approximately 80 girls there from clubs in the lothians and the borders from ages 9-15.

The Penicuik p7s did fantastic and represented themselves and the club really well.

The series runs from aged 9+.  There is a further session on the 16th March(1pm to 3pm) which we are keen to attend, if you are interested please drop us a DM or email info@penicuikrugby.org

Weekly Rugby Update: Get in the Game!

This week, I  had the pleasure of working with Sacred Heart and Mauricewood Primary Schools, building on the essential skills of ball handling and movement into space. These sessions not only help develop coordination and teamwork but also encourage confidence and enjoyment of the game at an early age.

At Beeslack Community High School, we proudly participated in the East Emerging Schools Conference with our S1 and S2 boys. The team performed exceptionally well in all their games, showcasing their hard work, sportsmanship, and passion for rugby (full report from Beeslack PE below).

Looking ahead, we are excited to attend the next conference in a couple of weeks at Currie. This event will feature our girls’ team and the S3 boys, giving them an excellent opportunity to develop their skills, compete, and represent the club with pride.

Rugby is more than a sport—it’s a chance to grow, connect, and thrive. We strongly encourage parents to involve their children in these programs, whether they’re just beginning their rugby journey or looking to build upon their skills. It’s a fantastic way to promote fitness, teamwork, and lifelong friendships.

If you want to try rugby please DM us.

S1/S2 Beeslack Rugby Success

Tuesday 4th March we took our S1/S2 Boys to Meadowmill Sports Centre to participate in the EESC rugby competition. The S1 team played games against Drummond HS, Castlebrae HS, St David’s HS and Tynecastle HS winning all of the games. Special mentions go out to Jack, Dani and Reuben for great agility and speed. Lucas, Martin and Logan for great tackling and Mason, Zander and Cameron for strong carrying of the ball.

S2 Boys joined up with James Gillespie’s High School and played against Tynecastle HS, Newbattle HS, Preston Lodge HS, North Berwick. Boys played very well, notable mentions go to Teegan for his try scoring and playing the new position of 9, Cameron for his strong carrying and tackling and Harry for his teamwork and passing.

Thanks again to Penicuik Rugby Club for allowing us to use the strips.

Next rugby competition is EESC S3 Boys & U14 Girls X-Conference – Thursday 20th March

Corstorphine 36

Penicuik started the game strongly scoring in the 5th minute with No8 Euan Reid charging over following an initial break by Haynes a series of phases

Evan v Corstorphine

Penicuik should have doubled their lead moments later when a period of pressure on the Corstorphine Try line should have resulted in a 2nd try, however Penicuik tried to look for individual scores on the try line rather than utilizing the space that was outwide with the backs, ultimately the ball was knocked on over the line to let Corstorphine of the hook.

This was as good as it got for Penicuik with the larger Corstorphine side bullying the Penicuik team up front and making use of poor tackles, try scorer Reid had to be replaced on 30mins for a HIA, and was missed the remainder of the game.

Corstorphine scored 36 unanswered points before Connor Mitchell crossed in the final 10minutes to double our try count

29th March v Dunbar (Away) 3pm

Elsewhere in the league

Its congratulations to Dunbar who were crowned Arnold Clark East 2 champions for 2024/25 with a convincing 31-7 win down at Hawick.

The East Lothian side have set the standard this season with some fantastic displays and a good team ethos which has been grown through the years as this team have matured through aged grade rugby.

Good luck next season, and we look forward to our trip for the last game of the season shortly.

Trinty’s exit from the league was confirmed with a very narrow 18-21 defeat at home to Leith Accies. (But with all things…. watch this space for league reconstruction)

It was also congratulations to Broughton RFC in Arnold Clark League 1, who celebrated their own Centenary by winning the league and promotion to the National 4 with a good 52-14 victory over Ross High.

Penicuik 2xv 7

Haddington 14

This defeat was a deflating moment for the 2xv who were pushing the league the majority of the season.  The side continued to try and play rugby against a series of stop start moments and questionable penalties (which even had the opposite side questioning).

The big take aways from this game was looking back to where the side were at the beginning of the season with a number having never played rugby before, and a number of others having to step up and fill holes in the 1xv for injuries.

All the coaches have been massively proud of the team on Saturday and hopefully that is the last time the team sat flat in the changing rooms after a game.
