Josh ‘in’ around

Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local schools.  Here’s what he’s been up to :-

Weekly Rugby Update: Get in the Game!

This week has been an exciting one for rugby development across our local schools!

At Sacred Heart and Mauricewood, we’ve been focusing on mastering the backwards pass, a key skill in rugby. The children have shown incredible enthusiasm and are quickly grasping the technique—it’s wonderful to see their progress.

We also kicked off our very first session at Paradykes Primary School. Starting with the basics, we’ve already begun building a strong foundation of skills, and the pupils have embraced the challenge with great energy and curiosity.

Meanwhile, at Beeslack, preparations are in full swing for the upcoming festival at Currie next Thursday. The kids have been working hard and are eager to showcase their teamwork and skills. Additionally, there’s plenty of excitement building for the primary school festival on Tuesday, which promises to be a fantastic opportunity for the kids to shine.

Rugby continues to inspire and engage young minds in our community, and we’re thrilled to see the joy it brings to every session. If your child hasn’t joined in yet, now’s the perfect time to get involved—rugby is not just a sport, but a chance to learn teamwork, build confidence, and have lots of fun!

If you want to try rugby please DM us.

Youth Rugby

Midi Rugby

Last Saturday our U13 welcomed Midlothian neighbours Dalkeith in an entertaining rugby clash at Montgomery Park.

Penicuik started with vigour and determination, as Leon broke through Dalkeith’s defence to score the opening try. Dalkeith quickly retaliated, scoring and converting to edge ahead. Penicuik’s lapse in possession allowed Dalkeith to capitalise and extend their lead. However, Penicuik’s resilience shone through when Euan scored under the posts, Penicuik levelling the score with a successful conversion. Dalkeith responded with two quick tries, ending the first phase in the lead.

The second phase was dominated by Dalkeith, who scored four unanswered tries. Penicuik struggled with their defensive structure, allowing Dalkeith to penetrate their lines with ease.

In the final third of the match, Penicuik displayed commendable spirit and determination. Their defence held strong, and a brilliant breakaway by Leon saw him sprint half the pitch to score. Logan’s powerful surge and offload set up another try for Leon. Despite Dalkeith’s response to maintain their lead, Penicuik’s teamwork and persistence led to another try by Leon. However, a brief lapse in concentration allowed Dalkeith to score the final points, sealing their victory.

Final Score: Penicuik 26 – 60 Dalkeith

Our U13 travel to Calvary Park Edinburgh this Saturday morning to play Portobello.  Kick off is 10:30

Members on home 6 Nations Weekends

On home 6 Nations weekends our members are usually found at Murrayfield, the clubhouse or gatherings to enjoy (or sometimes not) watching Scotland matches.

Last weekend we followed some of our members who were found to be missing the 35 v 29 Scotland win over Wales.

The Doyle’s were spotted photobombing the BBC Sport Cameras at the European Athletics Indoor Championships over at Apeldoorn, Netherlands last week.

The McKenzie’s were down at Crufts supporting their daughter, who scooped up an impressive amount of trophies!!

Whilst England fan, Aidan Dean and his wife made the trip to Rome to enjoy the England v Italy game, only to find it was actually at Twickenham! D’OH!!  thankfully they made the best of the situation and had a great weekend away.

If your out and about at an International this weekend (or even at the club) drop us a photo to show your team’s support!!

Fantasy Rugby

It’s tight at the top with only 71pts seperating the top 3.

Early injuries to Dupont and Lawrence wrecked several teams chances of a large score, whilst others benefited with Smith as Supersub!  The late withdrawal of Lowe also caught out several.

This weekend its a choice between playing safe or going for Glory and betting on upsets.

With several big ticket names now out of this weekend, this free’s up budgets to bulk up in other positions.

First up we have Italy v Ireland. Ireland’s defeat to France in Round 4 shattered Ireland’s hopes of achieving a Grand Slam and also dealt a significant blow to their chances of achieving a historic Six Nations three-peat. They sit 3rd in the table, 2 points behind leaders France, so they need a bonus point win and to hope that other results go their way. Either way, they need a big win and will need to attack hard. This is ominous for Italy who have conceded more tries than any other team and also have the worst points difference. The bookies are backing a convincing win for Ireland by 21 points.

Second up, we have Wales v England. Defeat for Wales in Cardiff would consign them to their 17th consecutive international loss and potentially a second consecutive Six Nations wooden spoon. Wales again were improved against Scotland in Round 4 and they definitely will be giving England a real challenge in Round 5. England themselves have been quietly impressing. They are now 2nd in the table and only 1 point behind the leaders France. England need a bonus point win to have any hope of catching France, but it will not be easy by any stretch. Nonetheless, the bookies are backing England to win by 11 points.

The 2025 Guinness Men’s Six Nations Championship reaches its finale exactly where it started, in Paris at the Stade De France. France’s opponents in their first home game since opening night is Scotland. For France, a lot of their destiny will be determined by the previous two matches on Saturday, but either way, a bonus point win will secure victory for them. They may be without the injured Antoine Dupont but based on recent performances they will still be racking up the points. It’s also mathematically possible for Scotland to take the Championship, but that scenario would require some extraordinary circumstances in all 3 matches to come to fruition. The bookies are backing France to stretch away for Championship glory with a 17 point win.

Good luck to all!!
