Weekly Rugby Development Update

This week has been an exciting and activity-filled period for rugby development within our community. We hosted a fantastic rugby festival and travelled to another, showcasing the enthusiasm and talent of young players while fostering a love for the game.

Our first event focused on primary school pupils from P5 and P6. With the generous support of Active Schools, we welcomed teams from Sacred Heart, Cuiken, and Paradykes Primary Schools to participate in a day of touch rugby.  However it was disappointing not more Penicuik primary schools joined us. The energy was palpable as the young players took to the field, engaging in fast-paced and spirited games. Their enthusiasm and determination were a joy to watch, and it was clear they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. A special mention goes to the dedicated pupils from Beeslack Community High School, who volunteered as referees and ensured the matches ran smoothly. Their professionalism and encouragement were key to making the festival a success.

In addition, we attended a festival for secondary school pupils at Currie Rugby Club, catering to S1 girls and S3 boys. The event provided an excellent platform for these young athletes to showcase their skills and enjoy the camaraderie of rugby. The S3 boys played 4 matches, 2 touch and 2 full contact in a 8 aside format with 3 forwards and 5 backs. The matches were thrilling, with players demonstrating their agility, teamwork, and passion for the sport. Whether it was a perfectly timed tackle, a well-coordinated passing sequence, or a darting run toward the try line, the players gave it their all, leaving coaches impressed and inspired given it was the first game of rugby for many of them. Their positive attitudes and sportsmanship truly embodied the spirit of rugby.

These festivals are a testament to the power of rugby in bringing people together, building confidence, and nurturing a sense of community. We hope these events spark a lifelong love for the game in our young participants and inspire others to get involved—whether as players, supporters, or volunteers.

If you’ve been considering taking up rugby or encouraging someone you know to give it a try, now is the perfect time. The sport offers opportunities for everyone, regardless of age, experience, or ability. Join us in celebrating this incredible game that fosters friendship, discipline, and resilience both on and off the field

MOM was Logan Macgregor Lasswade wing forward.

This weekend, our U16’s host Musselburgh & Currie and a 3 way round robin (and possibly one more side).   The action at Montgomery Park kicks off at 10:30am and our young side would appreciate a large touchline support.

The team for tomorrow –

Penicuik U13 40

Portobello 35

On Saturday morning, our U13 travelled to sunny Duddingston Park, with Arthurs Seat as an iconic background to place Portobello Rugby.

First Phase: Penicuik set the tone early, dominating with impressive running and handling. Alexander opened the scoring with a try, swiftly converted to establish a 7-0 lead. The team maintained excellent shape, allowing Aaron to execute a superb run and assist Alexander for another try, extending the lead to 14-0. Despite strong defensive efforts, Portobello broke through to score, narrowing the gap to 14-7. Euan’s powerful burst restored Penicuik’s advantage, scoring under the posts for a 19-7 lead. However, a lapse in shape allowed Portobello to score again, closing the first phase at 21-14.

Second Phase: Portobello applied relentless pressure, holding Penicuik back on their line and levelling the score at 19-19, before converting to take a 21-19 lead. Jude’s surge regained ground for Penicuik, but Portobello’s persistent pressure and Penicuik’s struggle to retain shape led to possession issues. Penicuik steadily regained momentum, with Euan’s drive and Alexander’s contribution restoring their lead to 26-21.

Third Phase: Penicuik continued to drive forward, with Aaron breaking through and Logan capitalising on a loose ball to score, extending the lead to 33-21. The game remained tightly contested, and in a back-and-forth battle, Portobello broke through to score, with the follow-up conversion giving them a 35-33 lead. However, Alexander’s remarkable run secured a final try for Penicuik, and the conversion sealing a thrilling 40-35 victory. Despite Portobello’s pushing hard to the end, Penicuik’s tenacious tackling ensured they held on for the win.

Midlothian Select Rugby

As part of a warm up series for the South District Rugby Union, a friendly match has been arranged between the South and a Midlothian select side.  The Midlothian side will incorporate players from Dalkeith, Lasswade and our own Penicuik players.

This will be the first Midlothian side to play together for many years (we are currently going through our records to check the last fixture) and will be a great experience for the players.

The match is scheduled to take place at Poynder Park, Kelso, Friday 18th April (Good Friday), ko time TBC

1xv

This Saturday our 1xv make the trip to Hawick to play Quins who are pushing for runners up spot.  Last outings for both sides ended in defeat with Quins losing to newly crowned league champions Dunbar 31-7 and Penicuik losing a tough battle to Corstorphine 36-14.

The team for the penultimate game of the season will be posted on socials later this evening, a deflated and depleted squad trained this week with several players clearly wishing the season was already over, leaving the selectors with a headache for Saturday.

2xv

The sexy seconds have their their final outing of the 2024/25 season away at Corstorphine on Saturday.  The earlier fixture between the 2 was awarded 28-0 to Penicuik with the Union Park side unable to field a team.

This has been an excellent season for the 2’s, the harsh season before against higher quality teams was a massive learning curve, and the side have shown lessons have been leant with improved rugby nuance with the added benefit of regular game time together.

Manny and James have been able to work at training with the same group of players, who have turned up every week which has allowed great sessions to take place and this has showed on game day Saturdays.

The final selected side will be posted later with the 1xv on socials.
