The Rebirth of a District
South District Union 45
Midlothian 19
Bringing any team down into the Borders is always an experience whoever you are playing, on whatever ground you are visiting. Bringing a team down to the Borders to face the mighty South is on another level. So, when Jason Hendrie (Coach of Dalkeith) said The South were looking to play Midlothian the answer was always going to be yes.
Midlothian have not had a district team for several decades and the resurrection of this “Mini District” was very timely for Midlothian rugby. All 3 Midlothian clubs (Penicuik, Lasswade & Dalkeith) are turning out 2 teams on a Saturday and the youth sections of all 3 clubs are vibrant. Grass Roots rugby also needs a shot in the arm and district rugby always pokes the level of interest. Not many players get to experience representative rugby and the chance to do so is always welcome. Mark Blair our team manager and rugby director was lucky enough to reach the dizzy hights of European Cup success representing Ulster, while on the way having played for Edinburgh and after having a couple of seasons at the Border Reivers. I had a couple of Cameos for Edinburgh and enjoyed being cannon fodder for the national team, that was enough to hook me into the values of district rugby. Jason Hendrie is a Selkirk dweller and his local knowledge and experience of Borders rugby at all levels is our spy in the camp. There is no doubt that this evening players will feel the collective emotion of rep rugby and relish in the occasion.
Games against the south are always momentous occasions for non-borderers. The cradle of Scottish rugby has always had a mystique that can only be comparable with the Welsh valleys. In younger days I always remember the build up to Edinburgh playing the South (or any district) and the sage like chats my Grandad (Peter) and Dad (Terry) would have. “Netherdale will be a quick pitch this weekend” or some comment from my Grandad (a great pitch aficionado) my dad would always have some insider knowledge from Dougie Morgan or someone in the know. All of this created a sense of occasion and a match to look forward to. Can district rugby return and is there a place for it in the modern game. Hell yes! Let’s create these memories for current rugby folks. Modern players deserve to share stories of their district exploits in the ways Breckenridge, Shaw, Burns, Donaldson and many others do so well.
Poynder Park provided a cracking setting for thegame and thank you to Kelso for hosting the match.
Thank you to co-captains Alan Haynes and Ryan Reid of Midlothian and to **** of The South.
Heres to the continuation of a great district legacy.

Congratulations to P5 player Leo Stephen who was the Edinburgh Rugby Mascot for their EPCR Challenge Cup Quarter Final victory.
It was Leo’s final words of encouragement to the boys as they ran on the pitch which made the difference that afternoon.
Thank you to Letterkenny from Donegal who came over last weekend for a fantastic Friday night under the lights rugby action.
Some great rugby was on show, with the Donegal men coming on top winners both on the pitch and the games off the pitch afters
Our own side will shortly be undertaking their own tour, however with the majority of the team having never previously experienced a tour the sensible decision was made to not travel too far so its a hop across the border to Carlisle..
