Last Saturday the 1xv travelled to Livingston for the opening league game. The opening 20 minutes, the team played to the intended game plan, working through their systems and opened the scoring through full back Ronnie Vatuloka.
However, injuries to prop on 5 mins and a dead leg to Haynes after 10mins started to put a strain on the team.
With the replacement bench emptied after half time, the team played the final 20mins without their starting 9, 10, 12, 13 & 15 and ultimately were unable to claw back points with Livingston slotting a penalty in the final minutes to secure a 16-13 victory.
The team can be proud of the front line defence and tackling, however no team can start to think about winning a game when losing their opening 10 lineouts and a scrum which is shunted backwards.
However the team came away with more positives than negatives and given this side really hasn’t played a pre-season game together there’s plenty to build on for this weekends home game to Hawick Quins
Hear from Director of Rugby Mark Blair about this weekends game.

Josh ‘in’ around
Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local school. Here’s what he’s been up to :-
This week, we kicked off our rugby sessions at Cuiken Primary School and wrapped up our final session with Cornbank. During the last sessions with the different age groups at Cornbank, we focused on key rugby skills such as spatial awareness, quick decision-making, and the speed and accuracy of passing. These skills not only enhance their rugby performance but also play a crucial role in real-life situations where teamwork, communication, and awareness are essential.
At Cuiken, we built upon the skills developed last school year, with a strong focus on passing under pressure and identifying and using space effectively. These concepts teach children how to remain calm and make quick decisions in dynamic environments—both on and off the field.
With Beeslack, we introduced the fundamental laws of rugby, emphasizing the importance of the backward pass. Through drills and small-sided games, the players learned how to apply these rules in game scenarios, preparing them for upcoming match opportunities. This focus on understanding and respecting the rules not only improves their gameplay but also fosters a sense of discipline, respect for others, and problem-solving—skills that are invaluable in daily life.
Rugby’s inclusive nature teaches young players to support one another and work as a team, values that will benefit them throughout their lives.
