Presidents Words

I can’t quite believe we are nearly mid way through October and well into the season already.

It’s been a busy start to  season and this weekend is no different as we look forward to a busy weekend of rugby.

The seniors have our first double header of the year as we welcome Leith and Edinburgh Northern to Montgomery Park.  It’s been a tricky start to the for both teams as a long injury list, player availability coupled with  a lack of opposition for the 2s which has meant things have been a little disjointed.

However I am hopeful that despite this we will see two home wins this weekend as the guys build on a strong and entertaining performance against Haddington which bodes well for the future. In particular kudos to the Fijian lads who have postponed their annual Fiji day celebrations to play.

As ever please come down and lend your support.

This weekends match’s are kindly supported by two of our sponsors Oval 4×4 and Rizzo Autocare.

Their support is invaluable in helping us run the club and securing our long term future

Thank you to both for their support and you know where to go if the car has a problem!!!

Talking of the future one of the early successes of the season has been the growth in the mini and midi sections.

Gav, Kris and all the coaches have being doing a power of work to attract new players alongside creating a postive and fun environment that people want to be part of both on and off the pitch. Please help us in anyway to raise the awareness of this great work and the opportunities for the younger generation.

Despite the club looking to build a positive environment for the Penicuik Community, our pitch was subject to mindless vandalism on Thursday afternoon with a dirt biker chewing up the turf which caused major damage.

Following footage we published on our social media channels we received several names for the culprit which we have now forwarded to the relevant authorities.

Despite this we are raring to go and looking forward to a great Saturday of Rugby in Montgomery Park.

Have a great weekend

Cheers

Gav

Josh ‘in’ around

Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local schools.  Here’s what he’s been up to :-

Join the Fun and Learn Rugby with Us!

In the final week before the school holidays, I wrapped up the last sessions at Cuiken and Sacred Heart.

We focused on honing their skills in passing under pressure and moving with the ball through various games and drills.

At Beeslack, we worked on passing accuracy and mastering backward passes with similar drills and activities. Our after-school sessions continued to build their game understanding and boost their confidence with the ball in hand, however it was disappointing to hear this week Penicuik High School have decided to scrap their after school rugby sessions due to a lack of numbers

Rugby teaches you to think on your feet and stay calm under pressure, which is handy in exams or job interviews. It also sharpens teamwork and communication skills, vital for group projects or work environments. Plus, the physical fitness aspect boosts mental health, reducing stress and improving mood.

Playing rugby isn’t just about the game; it’s about developing life skills that build resilience, foster collaboration, and boost mental well-being

If you’d like your child to try rugby in Penicuik’s primary schools please message Josh at do@penicuikrugby.org

1xv

Penicuik    41

Haddington 52

Although this on paper will be recorded as a consecutive 52 point defeat, this was one of the wildest Penicuik rugby games this touchline supporter has witnessed in his 35rs of watching PRFC 1xv rugby.

Haddington sit 2nd top in the Arnold Clark East Region 1 having the previous weekend put 45pts past Dalkeith at Kings Park.  After 15 minutes it looked as if the league place differences were accurate with Haddington 19-0 up and Penicuik unable to make use of what limited ball they received.

Then Penicuik found its heart, and in particular its beating Fijian Heart.  The signs showed with Lachlan Jones stretching the Haddington defence down the left wing and narrowly touching short of the line.  Some Penicuik forward play seen the forwards act like backs with Danny Tee off loading to Paul Smith who basketballed overhead style to Euan Reid to cross in the corner.

Penicuik hit back with a second through Danny Bete  following nice hands down the right wing.  Haddington adding a converted try before half time to lead 26-10 following a second yellow and subsequent red card for Kororua for a dubious high tackle where subsequent video evidence cleared showed the Haddington player had already slipped to his knee before contact.

The second half kicked off and seen Penicuik run in 3 unanswered tries in the opening 10 minutes.  A great break from centre Tawanayavulala seen full back Canakaivata under the posts, then a great lob pass from prop Cokansiga returned the favor for Tawanayavulala to touch down for his 2nd in the left wing corner.   The 3rd was an individual break from Canakaivata inside his own 10m line to sprint the touchline for his 2nd to see Penicuik 29-26 ahead.

A raft of injuries followed clearing the bench and a rework of the team.  A 3rd yellow seen Penicuik down to 13 which allowed space for the well drilled Haddington side to exploit and get back into the lead.  Penicuik clawed a further 2 tries when back to 14, with potentially a try of the season from Cartwright who took a ball in his own 22, made a break and off loaded to Tawanayavulala, a further series of interplay seen Randall pop to Cartwright in the Haddington 5m to touch down for his opening try of season.

Ultimately the indiscipline cost Penicuik the game, however they gave Haddington a real scare and should provide the belief they can open teams up and give a platform for the next 3 games before the Autumn break.

This Saturday we welcome Leith rfc back to Montgomery Park, who spent last season in East 1

The Leith games are always a physical affair with mixed results between the sides over the years.  Who can forget 1xv captain David “Sheepy” Sinclair’s ‘Milk Lemonade Chocolate’ try celebration from 2001…

Here are your 1xv side for Saturdays Game (check back for what likely will be changes)

Elsewhere in the league, Dunbar host Livingston in a top of the table clash and Royal High look to continue their resurgence with a home game to Trinity.

Penicuik and Leith will look to move clear of each other near the bottom after todays game.

2xv

No game last week out for the 2xv following Musselburgh 3xv withdrawal.  This week they welcome Edinburgh Northern, the last encounter in Feb 2023 seen the 2xv win 63-14 with tries from Luke Randall, Ally McCormick, Markis McCaig, Andrew Cartwright, Connor Mitchell, Martin Pritchard and a double from Steven Hawkins

Other league action in the 2xv.

Including our own, only 1 other fixture goes ahead where Corstorphine host Haddington.  With Musselburgh and Leith withdrawing earlier in the week due to insufficient players.

History of Penicuik Rugby Weekend

We are delighted to note our history boards have been reinstalled in the clubhouse.  Massive thanks to Brian and Ben who took time out their own busy time on Wednesday to carry out the work.

Former North Berwick coach Ken McAuley was retrospectively awarded Scotland Cap 1215 in February, as a result Ken has decided to give something back to the game and decided to take on the challenge of raising £1215 for 4 charities through a gruelling 1020 mile cycle visiting the 76 clubs across Scotland which he played at.

Ken is due at Montgomery Park Penicuik on Wednesday 23rd October on Day 19 of his challenge, it’d be great if the Penicuik Rugby community could come out and support (timings TBC) for full details click – https://scottishrugby.org/cap-1215-the-challenge/

Beenie Hats

Massive thanks to Dave Robertson at https://www.betterphysiotherapy.com for hooking up all the coaching team with Beenie hats ahead of the Penicuik Winter period. Now a key part of our mini coaching set up, we’ll forgive Dave for the numerous times he punished our 1xv side whilst scoring tries for fun playing for Leith RFC and hope he’s down this weekend to watch his former sides battle again.

We have a further supply of Beenie Hats available on a first come basis.

These will be available during Bar opening times, starting this evening, for £15
