Josh ‘in’ around

Our club development officer Josh is in and around our local schools.  Here’s what he’s been up to :-

This was the first week back from the October break and I started new sessions in both Mauricewood primary school and Roslin primary school.

We have been very keen to get some sessions in these schools especially with them being feeder schools for Beeslack and having not done any sessions this school year with them it was important to do so.

We did a lot of the basics of rugby and general hand eye coordination and finding space efficiently using different games and drills.

At Beeslack we continued where we left off and continued to work on game understanding and worked on when we should pass and also started to introduce contact with body on body drills and wrestling games.

If you’d like your child to try rugby in Penicuik’s primary schools please message Josh at do@penicuikrugby.org

Trinity 30

The boys arrived at Trinity in good time and had a good warm-up leading into the game.

Unfortunately some late withdrawls lead to changes to the squad before the start of the game, but moral was high and team looking good.

The first half did not go as planned and we saw ourselves down to 12 players  for indiscipline.   Despite this we finished the half only one point down thanks to a great break down the right wing from Luke Randall to score under the posts.

The second half started very well and we scored in the opening 5 minutes following some good forward play, the pressure led to the Trinity forwards giving away a penalty allowing Alfie to quickly tap and run 22m to dive over.  Leith pulled one back before Lachlan Jones made a break from his own 10m to sprint down to cross the white wash.  However, poor kicking, rucking, and scrummaging meant we kept giving back possession to Trinity.

Trinity were more clinical and as we started to tire out they ran in another 2 scores.

The game was lost due to poor decision making, fitness levels, organisation and communication within the team.

As the coaches have emphasised time and again we need to get to training and work on our game play to be able to win games. This was a very hard fought battle from everyone and every player showed a lot of heart and courage to keep battling.

Now onto next week and working on game management and positional duties.

Looking forward to next weekend!

This Saturday the side travel to Union Park Edinburgh to face Corstorphine Cougars who lost last week 24-12 to Royal High School and sit a place ahead of Penicuik with a record this season won 2 lost 4.

Games at Union Park are always tasty affairs, last season Penicuik sneaked a 13-11 in this fixture thanks to tries from Haynes and Ketchen, both of whom will be missing this weekend, however it was a last minute penalty kick miss by Corstorphine which won the game for Penicuik.

Again unavailability and injuries mean Head coach Mark Blair has to make changes to the side.  After an impressive 1xv debut from the bench last Saturday Kirkwood makes his first start for the team at loosehead.  Iceman comes in at 8 and Blair Gillian makes a welcome return to the lineup for his first 1xv appearance since December 2021.

Hear the thoughts of Blairso ahead of the game below, along with both the sides for the game

Elsewhere in the league:

Dunbar travelled to Leith Academical and put 83 points past the Leith men to top the league going into the Autumn break and are surely now uncatchable.

Royal High came out on top of the battle of the former RHC cougars and Hawick Quins leapfrogged Livingston in the league by beating the West Lothian side 34-10

This weekend Trinity will be looking to move off the foot of the league off they repeat Dunbars score against Leith when they make the short trip to the academy ground.  Dunbar welcome Quins and Royal High travel to Livingston

2xv

Unfortunately this weekends game at home to Haddington has been postponed.  The players are massively disappointed for a 2nd consecutive forfeit by the opposition due to insufficient players.

With a disjointed league full of cancellations, Penicuik find themselves sitting top, however Thebans sit just behind with 2 games in hand

Youth Rugby

Last Sunday the club made the trip to East Lothian and left dreary wet Penicuik for warm sunny Prestonpans.

Hear from P7 coach Dave Robertson and P5 coach Gav Stephen about the weekends games

CAP 1215 – The Challenge

On Wednesday we welcomed Scotland cap 1215 Ken Macauley to Montgomery Park as part of his challenge to cycle 1020miles and visit all 76 Scottish rugby clubs he has played against.

It was great to see support for Ken and also wonderful to see Penicuik Sponsor www.getapiper.com come down and play him into the park.

No stranger to the clubhouse following his time as Head Coach at North Berwick, Ken was also part of Jim Aitken’s Scotland select which played the 1xv back in 1990 to mark the opening of our current changing facilities.

For full details and how you can still support Ken click the link – https://scottishrugby.org/cap-1215-the-challenge/
