Youth Rugby

Midi Rugby (S1-S5)

Last Saturday our u14s went to Preston lodge to play a friendly. Both teams had low numbers but still made the most of it.

It was a fairly even split between them however we thought our bunch played extremely well and demonstrated great personal and team development.

2 short games were played followed by a 3rd all in mixup teams where they played 10 a side and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Well done team!

This Weekend

U14’s play at the Murrayfield Festival

U16’s have the weekend off

Dunbar 42

Tough day out at the office and a fair amount of reflection needed.

We went to Dunbar knowing a win would keep pressure on Dalkeith and put us in front of Dunbar. On arrival Dunbar were already out warming up and looking very organized making it clear they had the same message. It was immediately obvious that Dunbar had bought into it more when they came out the blocks like a steam train.

Similar to the last outing against Dalkeith we didn’t front up, with our defence having more holes than Swiss Cheese.  Our forwards were immediately bullied, although not technically better than us, they were just far hungrier for the win.  Dunbar got their first score on 3 minutes following from some soft Penicuik tackling, 2 more tries in the next 10 minutes massively deflated us which was always going to prove difficult to come back from.

Our heads low led to communication breaking down and ceasing.  The forwards lost the mentality to hunt in the pods they’ve been coached to do, with the ball rarely getting through the backs hands.  When the backs did get the ball we opted to kick possession away, allowing Dunbar to run back at us on their flat hard pitch.

When we did get a boost of confidence we stuck to our structure and it worked well leading to a try from Sprott.

It was evident we had players who hadn’t trained together, as per previous weekends we had very late call off’s resulting in Isi starting on the wing.  With a long injury/unavailable list we were already short, so turning up to Dunbar with no back subs and 3 forwards (including 2 props) on the bench was never going to help turn round a half time 29-0 scoreline.

A very disappointing day at the office for everyone involved but we know we can do better.  After a great start to the season we now have to raise ourselves for next 2 league games and the start of a cup run.

Players need to front up, turn up training, turn up to games and get back to playing how we did in the first half of the season.

Other results

This Saturday (weather permitting) we travel away to Hawick Linden.  Again a number of injuries/unavailable mean a number of changes.  Cokanasiga starts in place of Kitching, Calum Tait moves to 2nd row with Winnington returning at 8.  The backs see the return of Cartwright, Adler and Randall.  For the umpteenth time this season the bench only features 3 players

2xv

Penicuik 7 – 32 Lasswade 2XV

The start of the centenary year fixtures brought a major midlothian derby to Montgomery park. With Lasswade 2XV making the short town to town journey. The opening quarter of the match was a cagey affair, with neither of the teams looking to play a wide expansive style of rugby too soon. However the games scoring would be opened by Lasswade through the brute strength of their forward pack. With an attacking scrum on the Penicuik 5 metre line. The away side would drive the boys over the whitewash. This aspect of a dominative scrum wouldn’t last the entire game however, as the mighty 2XV forward pack would front up and give their all to save themselves from another humiliating scrum. From there the game would become fairly contested within the 2 packs to make for an exciting game.

The first half stayed one of the most tightly contested games the 2XV have played all season. Keeping Lasswade to just scoring 10 points with two unconverted tries. Scoreboard pressure would also be applied through a loose ball off the floor, dribbled along the pitch as if he was playing on the astro over the fence by flyhallf Alfie Harris who would be able to pop the ball to the crashing centre Roni Vatuloka who had nothing on his mind but scoring in that moment.

The second half would unfortunately be the home sides downfall in the match with 3 yellow cards handed out, Lasswade were able to move from a tight forward dominated game and employ their backline in exploiting the space out on the wings where the boys just couldn’t reach in time to defend. This ultimately would lead to Lasswade heading home with a more flattering scoreline in their favour and bumping them up to 4th in the league standings as it stands.

Despite everything the 2XV keep their heads held high in this tough season. With some exciting rugby still being played and practiced on the field week after week. With little games left to the domestic league season for the side, the 2XV look to cap it all off strongly putting out a strong side every Saturday no matter the circumstances and show their worth.

This weekend the 2’s make the trip to Inverleith Park to take on Stewart’s Melville.
