Presidents Welcome
Hello
A huge amount of rugby to enjoy this weekend kicking of with the last First XV game of the season tonight down at Hawick Linden.
We have an exciting blend of youth and experience travelling down and if it’s anything like last Fridays performance it’s worth a trip down to watch.
It was great to see the Second XV secure a much deserved win last Friday night against Edinburgh Accies. So many positives to take away from the evening including how much our visitors enjoyed their trip out to Penicuik. Huge credit to Rich Mann and Ben Cartwright for creating just a positive atmosphere for everyone to be part of.
As many of you will know our club was officially born in January 1924, which makes 2024 a very special year for us as we celebrate our one hundredth anniversary. Im delighted to announce that we have exciting plans to celebrate the year in style with a wide range of events across the year to reflect and honour the large number of people who have, and continue to contribute to building and shaping the fantastic Club we all enjoy today.
Our journey was started in 1924 by our founder members, a group of gentlemen from various backgrounds chaired by Dr Charles W. Badger and his brother Patrick, who were instrumental in bringing the game of rugby to Penicuik.
In that first season of 1924-25, we played a number of local clubs, including Lasswade, Peebles and Dunbar, and the team won 15 of their 22 games. A decent start and I wonder, could any of the founder members have envisaged how their foundations would have developed over the ensuing century.
Their foundation has been built upon by the effort and determination of literally thousands of people during these past one hundred years. Players, coaches, office bearers, ladies, youth, social members and the many others who have contributed, it’s important to recognise and thank all for what has been achieved. Our club has developed a fantastic reputation for being a friendly, inclusive and welcoming club to all and I’m delighted that our plans, developed by our hardworking centenary committee reflect this culture and the underpinning values of the game.
The centre piece of our celebrations is the Anniversary Dinner on the 8th of June which was launched this week. Giving as many people as we can the opportunity to attend the dinner has been a key driver for us so I am delighted that we have been able to host the dinner at the club at a price that represents great value.Details of how to purchase tickets are now on the club website.
In addition we have a number of other exciting events coming up shortly including – Centenary game vs Lismore one of our first very opponents on the 6th of April – A new sevens format on the 27th of April where for the first time we will run a Ladies Competition. – A history day which will give us all an opportunity to learn about the last 100 years and the many successes the club has enjoyed.
Finally we have plans to revive some old rugby club favourites, live music nights & the Christmas prize raffle draw. Full details of all events will be posted on all our social channels shortly As the contribution of our members has underpinned all that we have achieved, we would like to see as many old, current & new faces as possible in the club. You will be assured of a warm welcome.
We hope that you can help us to celebrate and carry on the traditions of all of those who have previously contributed. The success of the year will be enhanced when you join us whenever and in whichever way you can, be that coming down to the club to watch a game & reminisce with friends, attend an event or sending in your stories and pictures of any memories you wish to share. Please talk about what’s happening often and widly, encourage folks to come along, contact those who may now live far away yet share a common bond and history with you.
We look forward to seeing you all in the coming months.
Cheers
Gav

Youth Rugby
Last Saturday our U16’s joined forces with Murrayfield Wanderers and Leith to head to Kelso for the Semi Final of The U16 East Shield. Unfortunately a last minute conversation resulted in the game being tied, the rule being the in the event of a draw the team scoring first would win.
So congratulations Kelso for the win, we hope all the players enjoyed the experience of traveling as a squad and taking part in a high pressure semi final.
No action for any of our Midi’s this weekend… But please keep an eye out on some great Midi rugby activity planned for the warmer months

This Sunday our Mini players are home to Portobello, 11am ko if all players can be ready for 10:40.
Hot drinks and hot rolls will be available to parents throughout the morning from the lounge kitchen
Micros are also training 11am
We’ve been bringing to life rugby skills through the popular tv series Gladiators. Here’s a sneak at what some of our P4s have been up to

1xv
Before Christmas the 1xv were riding high top of the league, however consecutive defeats at home to Dalkeith and away to Dunbar ended any chances of a successful league campaign.
The 10-3 outings this season are an improvement on last season with the extra 10 bonus pts, but this could have been so much more.
Selection has been the biggest migraine this year. The coaching staff haven’t been able to select the same XV, or same pack, backline, centre partnership or back 3 in successive fixtures at all this season.
The team go into tonights final league game sitting in 3rd place, with Dunbar to play Corstorphine later in April, it would take a monster score this evening to overtake into 2nd place.

Tonights squad see’s the return of 2 long term injury. Maiyale returns having not featured since the pre-season warm ups, and Ketchen returns following his rolled ankle against Dalkeith in December.
The front row continues to be a point of concern with several players either injured, unavailable or simply not interested anymore.
Another different centre partnership sees Adler team up with Hope. Club Captain Hope, having made his 1XV debut back in the 96/97 season and has made the trip to volunteer park many times before, including when Linden coach John Tait was still playing in the front row for Linden!
Good luck to the team and hopefully we’ll see you in the club on the way home for the final league beers of the season
We are delighted to share we are again taking part in the Bloody Rugby League
You can read all about the great work being done by Bloody rugby here – https://bloodyrugby.co.uk

The point system for the premiership is
- The amount of donors registered in each team is (D) with no points awarded
- 5 points DKMS registration (SCD)
- 2 points blood donation (BD)
- 3 points Platelets donation (PD)
- 1 point bonus point for all 3 (BP)
- 1 additional bonus point will be awarded per donation if a photo is shared on social media with Bloody Rugby tagged in it when posting a stem cell swab back or a picture at the blood/platelet donation session (PBP)
