Presidents Welcome

As we approach a momentous milestone in our club’s history, we cannot help but reflect on the incredible journey that started back in 1924. It was a year filled with passion, determination, and the birth of a legacy that continues to inspire us to this day.

The original Penicuik rugby pioneers, who took to the field for the very first league fixtures, laid the foundation for the values and spirit that define our club. Their dedication, resilience, and unwavering love for the game created a bond that has transcended generations.

The first league outing was a 17-3 defeat away to Royal High School, which marked the first points scored in competitive action by a Penicuik XV.

Several weeks later a Penicuik XV made the trip into Edinburgh to play against a Lismore B XV and came back with a 37-0 Victory.

Now, as we celebrate the centenary of Penicuik Rugby, we have the opportunity to pay homage to those who came before us.

On the 6th of April 2024, a Penicuik select team will once again face Lismore, recreating that historic match and honoring the roots from which our club grew.

This special centenary match is not just a game. It’s a celebration of the indomitable spirit of our founding members, a reminder of the challenges they overcame, and a testament to the lasting impact they had on our club and community.

We invite all of members who have served the club as an Office bearer to join us on this historic occasion. Let us come together as a united force, with pride in our hearts and a deep appreciation for the legacy we have inherited.

This is a moment to honor our past, celebrate our present, and inspire the future of Penicuik Rugby.

Mark your calendars, rally your fellow club members, and prepare to witness history in the making. Together, let’s create a day filled with memories, camaraderie, and the unbreakable bond that can only be forged through the love of the game, if you previously served on a Penicuik Rugby Committee and wish to attend please complete the form in this link, and please send to other members who served on the committee with you as we have limited contact details https://penicuikrugby.org/centenary-office-bearer-lunch/

Cheers

Hawick Linden 21

Penicuik finished their 2023/24 league fixture with an entertaining match at Volunteer Park on Friday night.

Linden raced into a 21-10 lead, despite last minute call offs (a recurring theme this season), the Penicuik XV (a mixture of 1xv, 2xv and also a debut) dug in turned the game round.

Things started brightly for the home side with Linden breaking the Penicuik defence after two minutes to slide into the corner to lead 7-0. Penicuik then responded a couple minutes later with a penalty and started to get a foot hold in the game.

However, it was the home side who increased their advantage a few minutes later with a try from the Linden fullback who spotted a gap next to the ruck to dive over and his successful conversion left the score 14-3 after 13 minutes.

From the kick off a lapse in concentration allowed Adlerto go over for a seven-point score before, heading towards the half hour, Penicuik received two yellow cards in quick succession. This allowed plenty of space for Linden to exploit and it was their scrum-half, returning for his first game since a broken ankle in September, who sniped at a ruck to dart over. With the conversion good the home side looked in control at 21-10 ahead.

With Penicuik back up to 15, the Linden lost a man for ten minutes which was quickly followed by Penicuik’s third yellow card. The final score of the half went the way of the away side with some quick hands sending Ketchen into the corner to close the gap to six points at 21-15.

Penicuik came flying out the blocks in the second period slotting a penalty on 42 minutes with help from the crossbar. The next ten minutes saw the game open up and the Linden go close on a number of occasions but some great defending kept them out.
On 52 minutes the game turned on its head when the Linden prop appeared to make a great last man challenge chasing back but was judged to be high and saw red after receiving his second yellow.
A try for Randall quickly followed from a line out. Linden pointed out a mismatch in numbers at the line out and also pleaded for the try being held up, an altercation which led to two yellow cards and a dismissal.
Now two points behind the Linden had to play the final 26 minutes with 13 men. On 60 minutes Liddle  scored to take the score to 30-21 and straight after things got even worse for the home team as another player saw red for a high tackle. Linden needed to play 19 minutes with 12 men and Penicuik took full advantage running in five further scores to stretch away to 65-21. In the last couple of minutes Penicuik received a yellow and a red card which had no further effect on the game.
This game represented everything the Penicuik players have worked on this season.  Despite a mix of 1xv & 2xv, and being 21-10 down the players knew they had the edge, were fitter, skillful and more determined.
Everyone wore the strip with pride and played with enjoyment.
A Pleasure of a game to play in.
