Gav McQuillan
PRFC President
It’s my great pleasure to welcome all our visiting teams supporters and referees to our annual sevens tournament sponsored by our good friends at McKenzie Skip Hire.
After a long period of wet weather, even by Penicuik standards, I hope that even if the sun doesn’t make an appearance we have a dry warmish day to enjoy an afternoon of competitive free flowing sevens rugby.
In particular it’s great to have Walkerburn taking part in the competition given that this may be one of their last outings as a club. I’m sure you will all agree that this is an extremely sad situation and one that highlights the challenges we all face in running grass roots rugby. It’s vital that as clubs we all continue to support each other and secure the long term future for our clubs and the sport in general.
In our centenary year we are running various different events to mark this important milestone in our history. I’m delighted that this year, for the first time, we are running a ladies sevens tournament with four teams competing for the new centenary cup. This is something that we are keen to develop over the coming years and I hope next year we have a home team competing in the tournament.
I’m delighted that we will be joined today by Margaret Murray to present this years trophies Margaret(nee Buchan), born 4 August 1926, is the daughter of one of our founder members Andrew Buchan. Margaret served in the WRNS during WWII, early trailblazer as one of the first women to work in the medical physics department of Edinburgh University. Was Penicuik Hunters Lass in 1950, alongside Hunter – Nicky Gibson (former player of Penicuik RFC).
As we come to the end of another successful season I be would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the club during the year. On the playing side we have seen an improved league finish for the First XV and a league campaign for the Second XV that has been fuelled by determination and positivity that has won them plaudits from all the clubs they have faced during the year and have been a huge credit to our club.
The mini section continues to go from strength to strength and while our numbers at midi level have been down this year we are encouraged by the great start to our Friday night youth touch rugby tournament.
Off the field we have an exciting schedule of events planned for the remainder of the year with the focal point being our centenary dinner on the 8th of June.
Thanks to Brian Doyle and Rich Mann and their band of helpers who are working hard behind the scenes to make all of this happen.
I hope all our sponsors, who have contributed so much to the growth of the club enjoy their day out in the Nicol Gas hospitality zone.
Enjoy the rugby and we hope you can join us in the clubhouse after the final whistles to continue your day out
Enjoy your day
Cheers Gav
